Stand in a 1920s Seattle living room at four o’clock on a November afternoon and flip the one switch by the door. A single fixture comes on, dead center in the ceiling. The corners stay dim. The chair you actually read in is in shadow, the art on the north wall has gone flat, and the room reads as tired rather than warm. Nothing is broken. The house is simply lit the way houses were lit when it was built: one source per room, on or off.
That is the starting condition in most of the older homes we work in, and it is why the lighting plan for a whole-home remodel is one of the first drawings we produce, not one of the last. Light is the only design decision that touches every room, every material and every hour of the day. Handled room by room, it never quite adds up. Handled as one plan, it is the thing people notice the moment they walk back into a finished house, even when they can’t name what changed.
Why does my house feel dim even when every light is on?
Because your eye reads brightness off walls, not off ceilings. A single ceiling fixture throws light straight down onto the floor and the tops of your furniture. The vertical surfaces — walls, bookcases, the face of a fireplace — stay comparatively dark, and the brain calls the whole room dim no matter how much wattage is overhead.
Seattle makes this worse than it would be almost anywhere else. From November through February the daylight that does arrive is low, diffuse and blue, and it arrives for a short stretch in the middle of the day. Our Craftsman and bungalow stock compounds it: deep eaves and full-width covered porches, built to shed rain off the walls, also shade the front rooms year-round. Add a north-facing slope lot in Gatewood or Fauntleroy and a living room can go most of the winter without a single hour of direct sun. Artificial light is not a supplement in those houses. For half the year it is the light.
What are the layers, and what is each one actually doing?
We plan four, and we plan them independently so they can be used independently.
- Ambient is the general fill that lets you move through a room safely and read its shape. It should come from more than one place and should mostly be bounced or diffused, not aimed at your head.
- Task is light placed for a specific act: chopping, shaving, reading, folding laundry, finding the right lid in a deep drawer. Task light is defined by where you stand and which way you face, which is why it can’t be positioned from a floor plan alone.
- Accent is the layer that makes a room feel designed. Light on a stone hearth, a run of picture lights, a graze down a plaster wall, an uplight in a stairwell. It costs the least of the four and does the most for how a room feels at night.
- Decorative fixtures are the ones you actually look at — the pendant, the sconce, the dining chandelier. They are jewelry. When they are also asked to be the room’s only ambient source, they fail at both jobs.
Which lights do people forget until it’s too late?
The same ones, almost every time. The top and bottom of a stair run, where a landing sits in its own shadow. The inside of a pantry or a deep closet, where you are standing between the room’s only fixture and the shelf you’re trying to read. Hallways lit from one end, so you walk your own silhouette down them. Bathroom mirrors lit only from above, which drops shadow into exactly the places you’re trying to see. The approach to the front door, which in a wet winter is a safety issue and not a styling one. And the back four inches of a deep counter, which is where everything ends up.
Kitchens generate enough of these to need their own drawing, and we treat them that way — kitchen lighting is its own design problem, worked out against where your body actually stands at the sink and the range.
How much should be on dimmers, and how many switches is too many?
Nearly all of it should dim, and the control layer is where most lighting plans quietly fall apart. Four separate layers in a room can mean four separate switches, and a bank of six toggles at a doorway is both ugly and unusable — nobody learns which is which, so people default to turning everything on.
We solve that in design by deciding, room by room, what the two or three ways of using the room actually are. Cooking. Eating. Sitting after everyone’s gone to bed. Then we group circuits so each of those is one press, and we keep the wall plate small. We also hold the whole house to one color temperature family and one dimming system, because mixed drivers are the reason lights flicker at the bottom of the dial or refuse to go low at all. A warm, consistent light that dims smoothly to almost nothing is worth more in a Seattle winter than any single fixture on the plan.
Why do we draw the lighting plan before demolition?
Because after demolition the choices narrow fast. Fixture locations have to be coordinated with joist direction, ductwork, and any structural work happening overhead. In houses of this age, a lighting plan is usually also an electrical plan: knob-and-tube wiring in the attic, an undersized panel, and original plaster-and-lath ceilings that are far less forgiving than drywall once you start cutting into them. Any of that changes scope, and scope changes belong in the design phase, not in week three of construction.
Sequencing it early is also how the work stays short. Rough-in, inspection and closing walls happen once, in the right order, rather than reopening a ceiling because a pendant moved eighteen inches. What does doing the whole house at once actually change?
Consistency, mostly, and that turns out to matter more than any single fixture. One trim family so ceilings look intentional. One color temperature so a room doesn’t shift when you walk into it. One control system so the house behaves the same way everywhere.
