Three thirty in the afternoon, mid-November, a kitchen in Admiral. The overhead light has been on since about two. Outside, the sky is the flat, even white that passes for daylight here from October through March, and the window over the sink is contributing almost nothing. Somebody is chopping onions in their own shadow.

This is the condition Seattle kitchens actually live in for a third of the year, and it is the one a showroom cannot show you. In December the sun sets here before half past four, and on the days it does not really rise either, the difference between a kitchen that feels good and one that feels like a basement is entirely a matter of how the light was designed. Not which fixtures were bought. How the light was designed.

Why does my kitchen feel dim even with new fixtures?

Usually because there is one layer doing all the work. A single ceiling fixture, or a grid of recessed cans, throws light down from above and behind you. Stand at the counter and your own body blocks it. The work surface — the part you actually need to see — sits in shadow while the floor is beautifully lit.

Northwest houses compound this. The Craftsman and bungalow stock across West Seattle, Ballard and Wedgwood came with deep eaves, which are wonderful in a rainstorm and less wonderful in February; they cut the low winter sun before it reaches the glass. Kitchens in those houses are often on the north side, tucked behind the dining room. Add original fir floors and painted plaster, both of which absorb more light than they return, and you have a room that swallows illumination.

What are the layers, in plain terms?

Four, and each one has a job:

  • Ambient. The general fill that keeps the room from feeling cave-like. It should be the least noticeable layer, not the loudest one.
  • Task. Light on the surfaces where you work — counters, sink, range, island. This is the layer most kitchens are missing.
  • Accent. Light that gives the room depth: inside glass cabinets, on open shelving, washing a hood surround or a tile field so the material has some life to it.
  • Decorative. The fixtures you see and enjoy. Pendants, a sconce beside a window, a fixture over the table. These earn their place visually; we do not ask them to light the room.

Get task and ambient right and the kitchen works. Add accent and decorative and it becomes a room people want to sit in after dinner. Skip task and no amount of beautiful pendant will save it. Where do the lights actually go?

Placement is where design earns its keep. Recessed fixtures belong forward of the upper cabinets, roughly over the front edge of the counter, so the light falls on the work surface rather than down the cabinet faces. Push them toward the wall and you light doors; center them in the room and you light the floor.

Undercabinet lighting is not optional in a Seattle kitchen. It is the single most effective fixture in the room from November onward, and it needs to sit toward the front of the cabinet bottom so the beam covers the counter instead of grazing the backsplash. If the counter is a polished stone or a high-gloss tile, we plan for the glare that comes with it — a diffused strip rather than a row of visible points, sometimes a matte finish selection instead.

Over an island, the pendants should center on the island itself, not on the ceiling framing that happens to be nearby, and they should hang high enough for people to see across. At the range, the hood light rarely does enough on its own; we usually add dedicated light there. And a small, low-output fixture somewhere in the room, on its own switch, gives you the version of the kitchen you want at eleven at night — the one you do not need to squint at.

What gets forgotten until it’s too late?

Controls, almost every time. A kitchen with four layers of light and one switch is a kitchen with one setting. Every layer needs its own control, and everything needs to dim — dimming is what lets a bright, functional morning kitchen become a calm evening room without rewiring anything.

Switch location is the other one. Where is your hand when you walk in from the garage with groceries? Which side of the doorway does the door swing over? We look at that on site, in your house, with your habits, rather than defaulting to wherever a switch usually goes.

The rest of the forgotten list is structural and unglamorous: power inside a cabinet for interior lighting, the wiring chase for undercabinet strips before the backsplash goes on, blocking in the ceiling for a heavy fixture, an exterior venting path for the hood that determines where the hood can be at all. In a plaster-and-lath ceiling, every one of these is a decision you make before the ceiling closes, not after. Adding a light later means opening plaster, patching it and repainting the ceiling — which is why lighting is designed in the same breath as the kitchen layout itself, not chosen at the end.

How warm should the light be?

Warm, and consistently so. Cooler light reads as clinical in a room already dealing with gray daylight, and it makes warm materials — white oak, brass, unlacquered hardware, a soft white cabinet — look flat and slightly green. We keep the color temperature the same across every fixture in the room, because mixing them is the thing your eye notices without being able to name.

We also pay attention to how faithfully a fixture renders color, since that is what determines whether your marble looks like marble and whether raw chicken looks like the color it actually is. This is one of those choices that seems technical on a spec sheet and is entirely a design decision in practice — which is exactly the kind of judgment our interior design work brings to a build.

When does lighting have to be decided?

During design, alongside the layout — long before demolition. The lighting plan sets fixture locations, switch positions, circuits, dimmer types and blocking, and all of that gets roughed in before drywall. It also has to agree with the cabinetry, because a run of undercabinet light depends on the cabinet detail that conceals it.
